Understanding the Project

Initiation

As part of the federal governments BER Schools Grant, all primary schools received a building grant for a new facility.

The Catholic Education Office allowed each school to engage an architect. Equiset was successful in winning eight schools in Melbourne.

The projects include multipurpose buildings, learning centres, assembly halls and performing arts centres.

All projects were to be completed in 2010.

Delivery

The projects needed to be fast tracked. So Equiset assisted the Catholic Education Office in pricing the individual projects prior to the design documents reaching ‘for construction’ status.

Equiset contracted the projects on a “design construct’ basis. This allowed the initial works to commence before the documents were completed.

Most of the new projects were stand-alone while some integrated with existing buildings.

There was a mixture of single and double storey buildings with a steel frame on a concrete slab, clad externally with precast concrete, metal cladding, timber and Eco panel.

Large areas of glazing were also used.

Ecologically sustainable design elements like rainwater harvesting, shading, cross ventilation and landscaping were incorporated.

Due to the age of some schools, infrastructure upgrades were required to major site services.
