Understanding the Project

TIMELINE
'99

Initiation

In 1999 Equiset and Monash began investigating opportunities to transform the western component of the Caulfield campus.

In November 1999 Equiset entered into Pre-Development Agreement with Monash.

A number of design schemes for the redevelopment of the entire western end of the campus were produced.

Concept Development

The Project was broken down into 2 stages due to the difficulties with the retail component. Equiset produced a new master plan and concept design and stage 1 (Building H & J ) was subsequently approved by the council of Monash University on 13th August 2001

Equiset entered into project management and architectural services consultancy agreements with Monash.

The project was fully documented in 3D to ensure maximum resolution and full coordination of all elements of the design.

The site for Building H & J site was made available after the compulsory acquisition of property fronting Dandenong Road.

Design development was undertaken. Following a rigorous review process, Equiset entered into a Guaranteed Maximum Price Design and Construct Contract to deliver the Building H & J project.

Delivery

The building structure utilises an innovative precast column and floor beam structure system.

Fitout for the lower levels was briefed, designed and documented and then integrated into the base building works.

The building project commenced on December 2002 was handed over in December 2004 prior to the commencement of the academic year.

Features

  • A large central green 'common', which links existing campus facilities with the new building and car park
  • Floor-by-floor plant rooms provide an effective solution for the higher population requirements of Class 9 buildings
  • Efficient and flexible floor plate that is readily adaptable due to the large 9m x 12m structural grid
  • High-quality finishes and facilities
  • Equal access design

Statistics

  • 20,000m2 NLA
  • 62 car parking spaces

Monash University

Caulfield Campus (Buildings H&J)

Equiset was contracted to design, project manage and construct a AU$95 million redevelopment at Monash University's Caulfield Campus. Known as Buildings H & J, the project includes an eleven-level education building and an eight-level car park.

Equiset undertook a study of the campus, identifying building envelopes, possible property acquisitions and an overall campus development plan. The study concluded that the university’s available land was too valuable to continue with low-rise buildings. The development strategy increased the campus's usable floor by 40 per cent. This innovative project drew on new technologies that delivered cost and time efficiencies and environmental advantages.

The project was designed and documented in 3D using an integrated building model for architecture, structure and building services. The result is an outstanding design that provides state-of-the-art facilities for this internationally renowned university.
