Understanding the Project

Initiation

Having recently completed two significant heritage refurbishment projects in Manly for the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, Equiset began discussions with the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) for the restoration of the heritage listed St Benedict’s site, which is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, to transform it into the University’s first Sydney campus.

Early discussions with the UNDA highlighted that the project was required to be completed on a tight construction timeline, and that early works to the project would need to commence concurrently with the design development and lodgement of the Development Application.

Delivery

Through Equiset’s relationship with the Sydney City Council, early works to the heritage buildings were approved prior to the Development Application being issued, and these works were able to commence in January 2005.

The Development Application for the remainder of the project works was approved in April 2005, allowing the sequence of works to run smoothly.

The project was completed in December 2005, allowing the University to commence classes in the first semester of 2006.

University of Notre Dame (Law)

After completing two significant heritage projects in Sydney, the former St Therese's Convent and the Archbishop's Residence in Manly, Equiset was approached by the University of Notre Dame (UND) to redevelop two Sydney campuses in Broadway and Darlinghurst.

The first AU$10 million redevelopment converted the historic St Benedict's Church site in Broadway into a campus offering courses in the arts, business, education, law, philosophy and theology. The campus was officially opened by the Prime Minister, the Hon. John Howard MP and blessed by His Eminence, Cardinal George Pell in March 2006.

Completed on time and on budget, the UND Broadway campus project includes the restoration of the existing school, presbytery and St Benedict's Church.
